Since the start of the pediatric hospitalists program in July 2006, pediatricians Karen Ayres, MD and Mark Hughes, MD haven't seen a single patient in their office. That's because their service is dedicated to assisting pediatricians in caring for their patients in the hospital setting. This care is provided in various hospital areas including the pediatric ward, the newborn nursery, and the emergency department. Dr Ayres and Dr Hughes spend their days (and sometimes nights) at the Monroe Carrell, Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, Baptist Hospital, and Centennial Medical Center, coordinating care with the patient's pediatrician from admission through discharge. They serve as liasions between the family, the hospital staff, and the pediatrician and always encourage the family to ask questions and partner in their child's healthcare. Many pediatricians throughout Tennessee who are unable to serve their patients in the hospital due to distance or other conflicts have come to rely on Dr Ayres and Dr Hughes and know that their little patients are receiving the best care possible.
