Having your newborn’s hearing screened not only shows you care, it ensures your baby hears those precious three words, "I love you."

Centennial Pediatrics is proud to extend our commitment to healthy childhood development by providing hearing screenings to every baby born at Baptist Hospital. Centennial Pediatrics' team of skilled audiologists and technicians are available 7 days a week to answer questions and consult with parents regarding their child's hearing screening.

Why screen your baby's hearing?

Hearing loss is the most common disorder present at birth, affecting approximately 3 out of every 1,000 babies born. Half of these infants have no known risk factors and without a universal hearing screening, would not have been tested for hearing loss. If hearing loss is undiscovered, the child may also acquire language, social, emotional and educational delays. Early intervention makes all the difference to a child with hearing loss. Even a mild loss can greatly impact a child’s development. It is our belief at Centennial Pediatrics that every infant should be tested for hearing loss as soon as possible, giving each child the opportunity to reach his/her fullest potential.

How are babies screened?

Centennial Pediatrics' audiologist and technicians have specialized training in Automated Auditory Brainstem Response testing. This is a non-invasive test causing no discomfort to the baby. Sensors are placed on the infant’s skin and a small ear piece is place at the baby’s ear, making every effort not to wake the sleeping baby. The test is performed in minutes, allowing parents to receive results of the screening immediately.
